Some Fun Facts About a Jaguar

No one can deny the fact that the Jaguar is a cool car. Not only do they look cool, but they also run smoothly and are top of the line in terms of parts and performance. When you drive one, you can be assured you are driving in style (and will likely make at least one person envious of you). It’s not surprising that such a fun and eye-catching car has a rich history and that there are many interesting facts surrounding the vehicle.

The Jaguar Started as a Sidecar

It may come as a surprise that the Jaguar didn’t start as the cool sports car it is today, but as a sidecar, of all things. That’s right, in the beginning, it was a sidecar that would go on the side of a motorcycle or an automobile.

The company was started in Blackpool, England, by a person named Billy Lyons back in the early 1920s. Lyons, only 21 years old, partnered with his friend, William Walmsley, and together they formed a business called the Swallow Sidecar Company. The business was successful, and, within the next few years, they transitioned into S.S. Cars Limited, where they began making the predecessors to the sports cars on the road today. The business soon adopted the name Jaguar Unlimited.

Jaguar Name Meaning

The name “jaguar” actually comes from the word “yagura.” This indigenous word means “he who kills with one leap.” The name was given to the large cat because the jaguar jumps long distances and has the most powerful bite of all big cats. It can, in fact, crush turtle shells and bite through crocodiles with ease. It’s no wonder that such a powerful car was named after such a powerful animal.
